P5 Challenging Proofreading Exercises

20 challenging full-page passages covering the full range of P5 grammar errors. Full answer key. The targeted practice that turns easy marks into actual marks on HK school papers.

Targeted Proofreading Practice for Primary 5

Proofreading is one of the most-tested grammar skills in Hong Kong primary English exams from P3 onwards. By P5, the passages are longer, the errors are more varied, and the marking is stricter. Children who can spot, classify and correct errors under exam pressure pick up easy marks. Children who cannot lose them on every paper.

This 20-page printable PDF gives your P5 child structured proofreading practice on a wide range of grammar, in the format Hong Kong schools actually test. Every passage is challenging, every passage has a full answer key, and every error is the kind your child will meet again on a real school paper.

Why Proofreading Matters at P5

Proofreading questions test something most other grammar exercises do not: error recognition under pressure. Your child must read a paragraph, spot what is wrong, classify the error type and write the correction. Four skills in one task. This is also the question type that prepares P5 children for the same skill in HKDSE writing tasks five years later.

Three findings from research apply directly to proofreading practice:

Stephen Krashen\'s research on second-language acquisition shows that grammar awareness develops through repeated exposure to errors and corrections in context, not through isolated rule-drilling. Proofreading exercises put students into exactly that mode: meet the error, recognise the pattern, fix it. More from Krashen.

Rod Ellis\'s focus-on-form research demonstrates that students who notice grammar in context outperform those who only learn rules abstractly. Proofreading is focus-on-form practice in pure form. Each passage forces noticing. Rod Ellis on grammar instruction.

The Hong Kong Education Bureau English Language Curriculum Guide for primary explicitly lists self-editing and error correction as a P5 to P6 learning target. This workbook is built to that target. EDB English curriculum.

Grammar Errors Practised

The 20 passages cover the full range of grammar errors HK schools test at P5 level. Your child meets each error type repeatedly, in context, until the pattern recognition becomes automatic.

Verb Errors

  • Wrong tense for the time clue
  • Missing third-person s
  • Irregular verbs over-regularised
  • Subject-verb agreement breakdowns
  • Missing or extra to be

Article and Noun Errors

  • Missing or wrong article (a, an, the)
  • Plural s dropped or added wrongly
  • Countable versus uncountable confusion
  • Demonstrative confusion (this, these)

Preposition Errors

  • Wrong preposition for context
  • Missing preposition where one is needed
  • Verb-preposition pairs (listen to, look at)
  • Time prepositions (in, on, at)

Sentence-Level Errors

  • Wrong word order in questions
  • Missing connectives
  • Run-on sentences

Who This Workbook Is For

  • P5 students who need targeted proofreading practice for school assessments.
  • P5 students preparing for the HKAT or selective P6 entry exams.
  • Strong P4 students ready to stretch into P5 grammar territory.
  • P6 students needing remedial proofreading work before secondary.
  • Parents who want their child to self-mark using full answer keys, no tutor required.

Pair this workbook with the wider P5 bundle to cover all six grammar areas at this year level.

How to Use the Workbook

  • One passage every two days. 20 passages last about six weeks at this pace.
  • Time the work. HK exams are tight. Aim for 6 to 8 minutes per passage including correction.
  • Self-mark using the answer key. Your child compares their corrections to the model and writes a one-line note on what they missed.
  • Categorise errors weekly. Once a week, review which error types your child keeps missing. The pattern matters more than the individual mistake.
  • Re-do tricky passages. Passages with five or more missed errors are worth a second attempt a week later. Spaced revisiting locks in the pattern recognition.

"Proofreading is the grammar exercise closest to real exam writing. Practice it weekly from P5 and your child walks into school papers with the eye for errors that turns easy marks into actual marks."
